Treptower Park is located in the far south of Berlin and is a popular destination for the local population – particularly in the summer.

A portion of the park serves as a cemetery in which approximately 5000 Soviet soldiers, who perished in Germany during the Second World War, are buried. In memory of these soldiers, a Soviet war memorial was also erected in the park which became nationally known.

Even those who do not like visiting cemeteries should make a trip to the Soviet cemetery in Treptower Park. It offers impressive architecture and even the grave stones are elaborately adorned with relief carvings - many depicting war scenes. The cemetery also houses a mausoleum crowned by a monument. This shows a Russian soldier carrying a rescued German child in his arms; an extraordinarily touching sight.

Those simply wishing to relax should make a detour to the ‘Insel der Jugend’ (Isle of Youth) which is situated in close proximity to the park. It acts as a peaceful haven away from the hectic of Berlin and offers an impressive variety of plants.

In contrast, those more interested in science should not miss the Archenhold Observatory. It lies at the very edge of Treptower Park and is considered the largest observatory in all of Germany. It was built in 1896 during a major exhibition which was held in the Park. In 1909 the entire facility for the Observatory was extended. Visitors here will find an impressive planetarium in addition to the longest refracting telescope in the world – measuring an impressive 21 metres. Especially for families with children a visit to the observatory is a special experience.
